It was a cheap place to stay and has the basics covered, for the price i paid it was good. However i'd have been dissapointed had i paid the full price shown. My room was definitely a bit tired looking. Although the staff seemed friendly and helpful.
Weirdest hotel ever. Extremely hot with no control over temp, strange lighting, dark cold hallways, which is weird given how warm the rest of the hotel was. Clara at the front desk was helpful and great company though!
Where to begin. They are obviously going for a twilight zone vibe in this place, decor from the late 60s I would guess, completely tired and run-down. Had to walk ridiculously far to get to the room, and to exit had to go outside the back past the bins. No card payments in the bar (really!). Went down for breakfast and sat ourselves (no greeting from any staff), and after a while a lumbering oaf of a guy came over and grunted (and I quote) "you wanting a cooked breakfast?" We said yes please and he shrugged and looked disappointed, then lumbered off, returning a few minutes later with a breakfast which wasn't too bad. A classic example of everything which is wrong with Scottish hospitality, and why we're consistently ranked near the worst in the world for customer service - I'd note that the foreign staff I encounter when staying in the Highlands are all great, it's the locals who don't seem to understand customer service.Staying in these mental places is, however, all part of the fun. The 1 star doesn't mean I didn't have a good time. I did, in the same way that you have a good time watching a bad movie.You'll notice that many reviews say "some guests", meaning that the review was written by a travel company and that this place predominantly caters for coach tours who have little option, and therefore there's no pressure on the hotel to get into the 21st Century (although even the late 20th Century would be a start).
Lovely interaction with the front desk staff got things off to a good start, downhill from there. The hotel is rough around the edges. Lobby smelled of a strange odour. Toilet didnt flush. Street noise was loud but was expected as its right on the main strip however it was clear no attempt to remedy the noise or light from street lamps was made as the blinds were thin and windows were single pane glass. Stay came with a free breakfast but we didnt risk it. Everything felt unclean and I wasnt keen on eating there. With some tender loving care it could be a nice old style hotel, but thats far from reality. I am not normally one to write reviews but when the cleaning staff unlocked and walked into our room while we were sleeping 2 hours before checkout it put me over the edge. Wouldnt recommend until they make some serious improvements.
I really liked this hotel. I stayed here after cycling lands end to John o groats and the bath was very welcome. Rooms a bit tired but comfortable. Friendly and helpful staff. Bike storage no problem. Early train the next morning meant I missed breakfast but they did me a lovely packed lunch instead.
